A much quieter day in Gaborone after the excitement of the past few sessions. The only trading took place in Sefalana (1340t).
Nothing much to report from Nairobi once again as foreigners dominated proceedings. There was some foreign action in both major banking stocks as 3.5m shares traded in EQBNK (-0.6%) while 2.7m shares changed hands in KNCB (+0.6%). There was some activity in the usually illiquid Diamond Trust Bank as 506k shares traded.
There were 2 foreign bookovers just after the open in MCBG and SBMH which accounted for the bulk of today’s action. The rest of the market was incredibly quiet.
Somewhat surprisingly we saw bids returning in the banks (+1.28%) which drove the index higher, albeit still on thin volumes. The only decent action in the banks took place in Zenith Bank (+2.02%, N11.09). Consumers (+28bps) were also positive although outside of NB (-1.05%, N99.05) there really wasn’t much to write home about.
Please note that the index figure above is correct at the time of writing.
Every day in Harare feels like Groundhog Day with the index falling lower on thin volumes. And today proved no exception as interest continues to dwindle.
